i fall asleep in this product!!... pity me not... as the space heater in my tiny windowless cell of a room sits idle... how little work it hath done this winter season thus far, i assure you, sweet madame!!... i layer up beyond imagination... and if you can't fall asleep in this toasty warm comfy vest over layers... well, that's a confession you should not share with another soul, i tell thee true... a most wonderful product from L.L.Bean... i'll probably purchase the Loden to keep my Coffee Bean company... it is such a lonesome needy vest, emotionally speaking... you understand, of course...

Love this vest. Wore it over a wool sweater in freezing cold. It’s a bit unsettling how warm it is-Im not used to wearing vests during winter in Canada. Pockets are nice, especially the lined chest ones. Absolutely love it. The only downside is probably the fit: slightly boxy in the abdomen area if you have an athletic build.

Nice, BUT.....
I like the vest except for the zipper. It's a double which I don't mind, but it is an ordeal to fully unzip. I'm not sure if it's defective or just requires diligence and concentration to angle the zipper correctly.

Great design and well made
Sturdy metal double zipper seals in heat from below waist to chin. Unzip at neck and hips for ventilation. Use the snap closures instead when you need to instantly adjust for warming or cooling. Snaps are big enough to close with light gloves on. Nice-size pockets, hand warmers and generous inside zipper pocket. Warm without being puffy or bulky. Waxed cotton makes the vest a great wind and rain stopper. Although the waxed fabric is a bit tacky at first, it ages wonderfully with wear.The more warn it gets, the more you’ll love it! I’ve had mine for a couple of decades and still wear it in the field nearly every day this time of year.

Best gift I've ever received

Well insulated, love that it’s waxed cotton so it is water resistant. Best thing to wear in combination with the water fowl sweater as well, have worn that combo in sub freezing temps and still felt warm.

Quality Isn't LL Bean’s thing anymore
Zipper is Maddening! I read the reviews and figured “it’s LL Bean, the zipper can’t be that bad”. It sucks. I loved the vest, the look, the heavy weight, etc., but the zIpper’s craftsmanship is something you would expect from the dollar store. I can’t believe they put this on their site. I also bought a hoodie and the sleeves are already fraying, a puffer vest where the feathers are leaking, and a sweater vest that is all balled up. The company used to have a reputation for clothes that last a lifetime, but it’s vanished in my opinion.

I like this vest. It is not as heavily waxed as a Barbour or a Filson, but is sufficient for me. The weight is good for weather in our area (KY) during much of the Fall/Winter. I especially like the double zipper as it makes it much easier to sit in a vehicle.

I’m happy with it except I paid $179 for it but it had a $149 price tag on it.
The zipper needs to be bigger…look at Barbours for inspiration.
It is a very warm vest (which is good) and all the pockets are a nice feature.

Cannot be cleaned
My husband loves this vest. It’s so warm and all the pockets are great. He was a truck driver, driving across mountain passes and it is long enough to keep his back warm when he had to get out and chain up. The problem with that is it would get wet from the snow. He would lay it over the passenger seat to dry but it developed a nasty musty smell pretty early on. It needs to be cleaned good but all you can do is wipe with damp cloth and unfortunately that’s not enough. It won’t get rid of the odor.

Nice vest!
This vest is certainly not inexpensive; however, I frequently find myself around campfires or cigars that result in small holes due to flying ash in fully nylon products. I can now wear a vest without fear losing so much down insulation. Product works well and is one of the warmer vests I have worn in many years and has a nice high collar to prevent drafts. Highly recommend.

I found that the large was far too large, and the medium was too tight. Also, calling this a "down" vest is misleading:the vest was very thin, with just a hint of insulation. I doubt that it had any down at all.

OUTSTANDING Vest!!
Presented as "Waxed Cotton ...". If it is such, the shell has not even the slightest feeling of being waxed -- NOT a gripe! Merely an observation.
It's a great vest and very nearly the style I have been looking for since my vest of another brand (and no longer available) wore out years ago.
I offer only two design comments: it would be nearly perfect for me if the upper pockets were patch with flaps (smaller version of the lower pockets) vs. slash. The other would be to offer it in a few more colors, notably Navy and light sand.
Else if Bean still carries it when mine wears out, I'll be back for another.
