5 Star Look with 1 Star Practicality
This 2-Piece Rod Case has a 5-star look but gets only 1 star when used. This is not a carry-on case. Waxed canvas is very impractical when being placed in aircraft luggage compartments. I’ve traveled a dozen times with this rod case and it’s filthy with aluminum dust from aircraft cargo holds. It cannot be cleaned. I’ve tried mild soap and a brush. It doesn’t work. Check out the picture to enjoy the fine patina that the airlines have given this lovely case. This is the only case I’ve found for 2-piece rods. The good news is that it offers 5-star protection. The added side pockets are great for non-breakable storage. Don’t pack plastic fly cases or reels if you’re going to let the airlines handle the rod case! I could scrap my 2-piece fly rods for 4-piece rods and carry my case onboard, but I like my 2 piece rods.
Suggestions: Offer the same case in black ballistic nylon! This would be a uniquely great bag plus the aluminum dust would not be a problem. This is one reason almost all travel luggage is black these days. Get rid of the magnetic clasps on the side pockets! They may look good, but they don’t work. The flaps they hold down almost always comes off the luggage carousel open and anything in the zippered side case is left barely protected. Use a real buckle attached to the bag that will stay in place and protect the contents in the side case. Another option would be to offer a protection sleeve to cover the waxed canvas when traveling.
I love L. L. Bean products, but this classic bag needs an upgrade for todays travelling fly fisher!

Perfect case for Aikido weapons.
While I don’t use this case for its intended purpose, I have found it to be perfect in size and shape for my aikido weapons. Typically, we will use three different weapons throughout the week. And while I carry three or sometimes four, it could actually carry several more. The elastic bands that are meant for flyrod tubes are perfect for my bokken and my staves. They keep them from sliding against one another to and from the dojo. The large outside pockets are very secure and hold my tanto and other accessories. This a great case for my investments.

Very Nice
I have both Maine Guide Waxed-Canvas Rod Cases; this one and the shorter one for four piece rods. They are sturdy, very nice looking, and best of all, reasonably priced. I'll be getting an additional 4 pc. case soon.

Very nice bag
This is a very high quality bag. It holds a ton of gear and will provide good protection. It’s not light but that only enhances the protection. Definitely would recommend. May buy another.

Maine Guide 2-piece rod case
I was actually amazed at the quality of this rod case when I received it. It is a great piece of gear that’ll be used to haul my bamboo rods on fishing trips and to keep them safely stored at home. The quality and design make it easily worth much more than it costs. I’m buying another one.

Well made and useful
I like it. I travel by float plane a lot and this fits the bill. A stiff case is often hard to manage in a small plane. These are really nice.

Classic Case with modern amenities
This case is sturdy and well made. It can easily fit 4-5 rods. The side pocket flaps are held down by power magnets and the top buckles on them give a classic impression. The pockets have a strong zipper for quick and easy access. They are large enough to hold reels, fly cases and other items of your choice for a day or week on the water. The more that I use it the more character it will have over time.

Maine Guide Waxed Canvas 2 Piece Rod Case
I just received my rod case and I love it. I'm going to use it for transporting my bamboo rods. I was able to put six rod tubes inside, three through the loops and three secured between them, and had no trouble closing the case, probably could have put two more in. Rod tubes were secure, no clanking around, plenty of padding. The outside pockets are very secure, zippered closures, you can put several reels in each of them or a couple of fly boxes. The longest two piece rod was an 8'3" and I'm sure the case could handle a two piece 8'6" rod. Great craftsman ship, has that old fashioned feel. Def. worth the price, am going to buy another one as soon as Bean has another sale!

Very nice!
This is certainly the nicest rod case I have ever seen. Quality throughout. It protects the rod tube as well as the rod. With all the quilted padding, it could probably serve as a gun case as well.

Very well built
Like other reviews, I agree that this is a heavy and somewhat bulky item. The padding is excellent. It should protect even the finest of rods and reels. The outside pockets have plenty of room for fly boxes or whatever else you may need. The design is classic, but with modern features such as magnetic clasps for the buckle straps. I would buy this again.

Beautiful but heavy
This is a beautiful product. It appears to be very well built and shows signs of a quality product that should last for many years. Despite the great features of the product, it is just too heavy for my taste. I am looking for a product that I can use traveling on airplanes, etc. Weight is a critical factor for me, so I returned the product.

Huge Quality Protection
Significant step forward in rod tube travel protection. Very high quality product. Heavy duty in all respects - tough canvas and inside padding will certainly give the protection we all want when traveling in vehicles. Rod tubes are held securely, large outside pockets are a plus. I have an older rod tube holder from Bean's I purchased many years ago and still use it but not for traveling. This new product has elastic holders for three rods but will store six easily. SO I plan to leave a few at home when I'm on the road. It is not light in weight and that's OK. I wanted a quality case for my bamboo rods and the ability to carry three in total protection. You will not be disappointed in this strong carry case.

A 'modern classic' - rugged and durable
As a rule, I avoid 'imported' goods. Due to the LLBean brand, I bought the rod case; and it is indeed a quality-crafted piece, far exceeding my guarded expectations. 'Old School' bamboo fly rods are my choice, and this bag will hold up to five rod tubes handily - three in the elastic loops and two strapped between. Amply quilt-padded inside and durable heavy waxed canvas outside makes for one tough carrier. Exterior pockets are oversized and easily hold reels, fly boxes, and other accessories. Simply fold over and strap one end to meet airline limits. Best fishing luggage for the job.

An excellent bag
This is a well-designed, well-built and sturdy bag for 2-piece rods. It will easily accommodate 58" rod tubes. It has elastic loops to hold three tubes in place and the bag will probably take four or five tubes (depending on their diameter) if the loops aren't used. The bag is heavy canvas and interior cushioning adds further protection to rod tubes. The external pockets will hold a substantial amount of additional gear. The zippers have loops to enable the bag to be locked. All in all, this is an excellent bag.

elegant
First I must say LL Bean has impeccable customer service. They really care about exceeding expectations. The rod case is of excellent quality and much heavier than expected. When I say heavier, I mean it is not a cheaply made case, it has girth to it. The two outer pockets are large enough to keep fly boxes, reels and other gadgets. The interior lining is of good quality, again not cheaply made. The overall appearance of the rod case is very elegant and traditional. I would highly recommend this case.

Unreal
It arrived today. How is this only $99 including shipping? I appear to be holding something easily worth three, possibly four times as much as the retail cost. I now have four (2 pc.) spinning rods (one at 7’) placed inside in the olive drab quilted padding. This is along with two spinning reels in one of the two massive side packs. Note- This is replacing my Plano case, which imploded after only eight years of use. The only thing I can compare this to is a high-end purse that the beautiful Mrs.ifrpilotmn purchases bi-annually. Those things are easily (based on the statements) $300+ for less than half the amount of leather, brass and canvas. This is unbelievable. Not that I would normally compare a rod case to a woman’s purse, but based on the fact that they both hold THE MOST IMPORTANT ITEMS IN THE WORLD BASED ON GENDER, then yes, it’s a valid comparison.

Very well made with excellent attention to detail. The overall case is quite heavy but will provide maximum protection for your rods and reels. Leatherwork is beautifully done. It is a work of art as well as being a practical piece of equipment.

Excellent bag and better value
This bag is well thought-out and well executed. The quality surprised me considering the price. I also expect that it may do some double duty as a shotgun bag.
In addition, I ordered the 4-piece rod bag, and look forward to receiving it.
Overall, excellent product and what you would expect from LL Bean.

Great for wooden rod cases
I build fly rods as a hobby and have recently started making hexagonal wooden rod cases to go with them. I wanted a way to take the wooden cases on a fishing trip without damaging them. The Maine Guide Waxed-Canvas cases fit the bill. First I bought the shorter one for 4-piece rods and liked it so much I got one for two-piece rods as well.
The case seems very well-made. I like the interior elastic loops for holding the rod cases and the outside pockets hold reels safely and securely. I also like the magnetic closures over the zippered pockets. Makes for a classy look overall.
We took the cases on a trip to Montana and they performed very well. My wooden cases are still like new, despite using them everyday.
I expect to get many years of use from the cases and will be buying more.

9 Foot Rods Do Not Fit
If your rods are 8'6" and under, this is an excellent case. It is not a hard case, so if you are shipping or in a rough environment, put your rods in tubes and then in the case. If style matters, then you'll be looking good. If you want functionality, this one is a bit weak.

2 section fly rod case
Wow, very pleased with this case for my two section fly rods. This is so well made... padded, with two large outside pockets for reels, etc. Its simply all I expected. Looks great with the leather trim. It is long! But its designed that way to hold two section 9 foot rods. I have a four section case that is made by Fishpond, but this one is actually nicer.

Fine Product
This seems to be a very well made case. It is on the heavy side and beware: the 58 inch length is streching it a bit. Mine is 52 inches and holds two pc 8' rods but not the 9' or 8' 6" tubes. I have a similar gun case that has lasted over forty years and this case seems to be of better quality. Should last much longer than I will!

A Joy to Own
I ordered this by accident (intended to get the smaller one for 4-piece rods), but was very impressed by it nonetheless. Called LL Bean to make the exchange (and, amazingly, my call was answered by a real human who was incredibly helpful).
When the smaller one arrived, I couldn't bear to part with either of them; decided to keep both. Smaller one fits my 4-piece rod tube just fine. Decided to use the large one for a gun (it has plenty of padding for that).
Both of these items are beautiful, and are a joy to own. The quality and craftsmanship is excellent. Very impressive. I hate to actually take it fishing with me, since I hate to get it dirty!
Only problem is the large one is a little too large and the small one is a little too small. Would love to see an intermediate size, maybe for 3-piece rods. That would be perfect, and I'd buy that one, too.
