Our iconic 1980 Blue Rock Sweater was so good, we had to bring it back twice - once for the launch of our original L.L.Bean Signature line, and again this season. Made of 100% Shetland wool knit that's incredibly soft and toasty warm without feeling too heavy or bulky.
Originally inspired by Norwegian sweaters and knit from soft, substantial 100% wool, our 1980 Blue Rock Sweater was an instant classic. We reinterpreted it (and renamed it) with a more modern fit during the launch of our L.L.Bean Signature line in 2010, while making sure to keep the same authentic details as the original. Turns out we love it just as much now as we always have--proving that some things truly never go out of style.
- 100% Shetland wool, admired around the world for its softness and durability.
- Machine wash, dry flat.
- Woolen-spun knit feels lighter and less dense, while retaining its softness and warmth.
- Ribbed neck, cuffs and hem.

Extremely snug
I wear medium-tall, and everything else medium-tall from LL Bean fits me great, but this sweater in medium-tall was difficult to get my arms into the sleeves, and the body of the sweater felt tight as well. I'm tall, but not a big guy, and so I don't know who would have skinny enough arms for this sweater. The length of the sleeves and the shoulders were all correct for a medium-tall, but it is as if they wanted to use the least amount of wool possible. The construction of the sweater was nice otherwise. Had to return.

Great value and quality!
I’ve been extremely pleased with the Signature 1980 Matinicus Rock Crewneck Sweater. The comfort and fit are excellent—true to size with just the right amount of structure. The fabric feels substantial without being heavy, and it wears well throughout the day without losing its shape.
The craftsmanship really stands out. It has a classic, timeless look that works just as well casually as it does layered for a more refined outfit. After multiple wears, it still looks and feels great, which says a lot about the quality.
Overall, this is a well-made, versatile sweater that delivers on comfort, performance, and style. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it and would absolutely purchase it again.

Neck hole too big, but otherwise great
This is a really nice, thick, old school Nordic sweater that I would have loved if ther neck hole weren't about for inches too big. Not a good look. I wear an XL in everything and this is my first time having this problem.
