Thirty Plus Years of Excellence Comes To An End
I've been trekking across the globe for over 50 years; and using L.L. Bean's Cresta Hikers for a little over 30 of those years; owning no less than four pairs. You just couldn't beat them; well made, quality material, decent price, and famous Italian workmanship. Those days are gone. A few months ago a friend of mine bought the "New" Cresta II's; he didn't like them, so I bought them off him. What a difference!!! I wore them for about two months and threw them in the trash. Made now in Vietnam, with inferior materials, noticeable drop in workmanship, and still commanding the old Cresta price, I went on line to see if they still sold the original. Well, it's an end of an era, the originals are gone...... Buy at your own risk; my right sole came loose from the upper in just two months. All those years of excellence; down the drain. What happened to you L.L. Bean?

25 Years old and going strong!
My wife bought me a pair of these 25 years ago, while they don’t look as good as they used to they are still my go to for harder hikes when I need ankle support. I love them!

Something not quite right
Build quality seemed good but they flexed in the wrong place, putting pressure on my big toe. Unfortunately the first time I took them out was on a 4-day remote trip so I didn't have any other options, and it ended up hurting quite a bit. It didn't seem like something that would resolve by breaking in and hurt again every time I tried them after, so I ended up returning them.

Cresta boot
Last pair I bought were made in Italy, These were made in Vietnam. I am trying to like them, but can tell the difference. They are not the same quality.

I like these boots.
These boots are comfortable from the moment you put them on. They require very little break in. This is the third pair I have owned. They are waterproof and wear well. The first two pair were made in Romania. This pair is made in Viet Nam. I can’t tell any difference.

Cresta II Hiker
Sizing is perfect. This is the sixth pair over the years. Break in is just a matter of a few hours. Mine have been worn on and off of hiking trails in the South, mid-West, and far West. I've worn them crossing streams, in the snow, in heavy brush, and across rocks. They are really great. Would recommend them to anyone.
