I live in Northern California. This jacket is described as ultrawarm. Its not quite warm enough for 53° and cold rain. However, I can comfortably fit an LL Bean ultralight packable vest under it. Then its cozy. As a aside, for decades I have purchased all LL Bean clothing and coats in size Medium. They were massive, and I had to order a size Small. I am 5''2" and 119 pounds.
I love this jacket.

NOT Ultrawarm but great mid-warmth jacket
Does not have enough down and is definitely not Ultrawarm, but with a midweight base layer and thick fleece pullover, this jacket works well in temperatures down to about 28 degrees F. I am outside taking care of my horses for several hours at a time and need to stay warm and be able to move, lift, etc., and this jacket is light and flexible. The hood works well because the fur protects my face, but I can easily flip it back out of the way when I need good peripheral vision around the horses. It does not replace my old winter parka which I need for lower temperatures and windy conditions, but I decided to keep this jacket.

Great jacket for the winter chill

Poor Hood Design
The jacket is nice; however, the hood is not. No matter how I adjusted it I couldn't make it fit properly, very disappointing. The pieces in front were too large and loose, defeating the purpose of keeping the wind out. Another poster had reported the same problem, wish I had heeded her advice. I returned it, too expensive to hang in my closet unworn.

Poor Quality
The jacket is a nice quality but the fake fur on the hood is the cheapest I have ever seen. I have purchased this jacket a few times in the past for other family members and the fur on the hood has always been of great quality. This recent purchase was a big disappointment. The fur is a matted flat and very thin strip of the cheapest quality. It's not even sewn on correctly. The jacket is nice but the cheap strip of fake fur on the hood makes the jacket look cheap. It looks nothing like the picture.

A Jacket that Fits at Last
A Petite Medium fit perfectly despite my large shoulders and not so skinny arms. I really appreciate Bean's Petites. I could probably wear a medium weight sweater under it. A large would have been too big in the body. Overall, it has a nice feel to it, comfortable, easy to take on and off, warm pocket linings. The inner sleeve cuffs are cozy and warm. Plus I can quickly snap one snap to secure and not have to mess with the zipper. While some have complained about the large hood with good reason, I have to say that when it's down, it adds something to the style, except for those velcro flaps that look weird. I may have to find a way to tack them back. It doesn't get cold enough here to need that level of face protection. I agree with the complaints about the pocket size. My cell fits into the exterior pockets, but I'd like to see it slightly deeper. The inner pockets will fit my cell but it's a squeeze. Paperwhite is one of my favorite winter colors and looks gorgeous in this jacket. It might get dirty while working outdoors, but for wearing to and from winter gatherings, it's a little more dressy than blues and blacks. I saw the spruce in the mid-thigh version of this and thought it would be beautiful in this--hint, hint. Overall, I love it!
