Nice fabric, issues in manufacturing
The pair I will be taking to UPS tomorrow is the 3rd pair of Field Chinos I have received in the past couple of weeks. I give up. The waist was supposed to be 36”. With the first pair, the waist was 35”, assuming that you measure the waist without pulling the button all the way to the limit of the button hole. I figured they would shrink when washed, so I returned them. The 2nd pair was the correct size in the waist, but the little flaps on the waist band at the side-back were too short. When buttoned at the near button the waist band still got snugged up a little bit. The third pair was also a little bit less in the waist than it should have been, so I decided to give them a quick wash. After washing in lukewarm (not hot) water and drying on the permanent press setting, and taking them out still slightly damp, the waist had shrunk a little bit, to where they measured 35”. I could have worn them, but I wouldn’t have had the spare inch that I like. Then I noticed something odd about how they are cut. When I laid them flat, the upper edge of the waist band had a pronounced curve, high at both edges and about an inch lower in the middle. For the left leg (the right leg as you face them), the angle between the vertical edge of the fly and the top (or bottom) of the waist band is noticeably greater than 90 degrees. Because of this, the upper edge of the waist band is angled up as you move away from the fly toward the side edge of the leg. There is additionally a curve in the upper edge of that piece of fabric - the leg. You can even see this in the two of the pictures. In the top picture, someone pulled them high in the middle to conceal this, but you can see the ripples that were created when this was done. In the second picture, where they are worn by a dude wearing tan or peach shirt, you can see that the angle I referred to above is significantly greater than 90 degrees. The total effect is concealed by the shirt having been pulled out and draped down over the waist band at both the right and left sides. Quite the trick, that. After I pondered this for a minute or two, it dawned on me why this happened. The stretch in the stretch twill is greatest in the diagonal direction from the upper corner where the button hole is, down and toward the outer side edge of the leg. The fabric stretches more in that diagonal direction than in the opposite diagonal direction. This, what is happening with these pants when the pieces are cut at the factory is that the material is being stretched on the flat surface where something, possibly a laser, comes along and cuts out the pieces. Once the piece is cut out, the leg shrinks along that diagonal direction, leaving that corner, which should be 90 degrees, more like 100 degrees, and leaving that curve that you see on the edges (upper and lower) of the waistband (the waistband is sewn to the leg which is curved along the edge that joins to the waistband). There should not be something like this in a pair of trousers that cost $90.

Pants great, pockets not so much
Love the fabric of these pants, but the white fabric of the pockets stick out of the pockets front and back.

Expectations more than fulfilled
Over more than 40 years of custom, I have learned to trust L. L. Bean for quality and rugged wear, as well as attractive colors in traditional styles. These field chinos are no exception! With advancing age, I have lost some weight; and these trousers fit me to a "T."

GREAT PANTS
I am normally a Duluth guy. I needed to replace a dark brown pair of pants that they no longer sold. So, I checked out LLB. I like a heavy pant, so I figured the Field Chino would be perfect. The picture of the Dark Ash pants looks brown, so I bought them. They are actually green. You can really see the difference between my pic and the website pic. Now I have three pair of green pants, but different shades. That's okay, because these pants are really nice. They fit perfect and are very comfortable. I wish LLB had them in dark brown. I will be getting another pair regardless, I do not know which color.

Inconsistent Sizes
First pair of these pants I bought was tan, size 36 waist……fit was perfect. Second pair was olive, same size 36…….could barely tie at the waist! This happens often enough at Beans……inconsistent fit based on colors of the product. Same problem with their polo shirts. Bought pants elsewhere and no longer buy shirts at Beans.

Excellent as usual.
As always with L.L. Bean, the product fit the description, the fit and comfort are just right, and the quality of manufacture is excellent.

Perfect Fit with Somewhat Flexible Waist
I recently lost weight and needed to buy new pants. I bought 2 pair of these chinos, in Dark Ash and Dark Loden. They fit really well because the waist is somewhat flexible. I really love the soft fabric. It is heavier than most chinos, sort of like denim jeans. When I washed them I dried them on ultra low. They turned out perfect with no wrinkles. I just needed to hang them up. They didn't need to be ironed. The metal button used to close the waist is much better than just having a button like on some pants. These pants have 8 beltloops, which is great. Notice that many men's pants these days have manufacturers skimping by only having 5 beltloops, which is far from adequate. A note on the colors. What I received is very close to how the color appeared on my screen, but the names of the colors are a bit misleading. Dark Ash to me implies that it will be grayish. Instead it is a darker brown. Maybe a name like "Forest Ground" or some such would be more accurate. The Dark Loden is pretty close in reality, although in dimmer light it looks somewhat brownish instead of green. I am fine with the colors but just wanted to mention that the colors do shift a bit in different light conditions. Overall, I am very happy with these high quality pants.
