We've redesigned our best pack ever. It's been updated with new, durable recycled main body fabric, tough 600D Kodra bottom and a rugged 210D nylon lining. A new top lid pocket is perfect for electronics or sunglasses. Front pocket is equipped with two side-release closures instead of a zipper for easier access. And this has been accomplished while preserving its retro rucksack style.

All-around Great Backpack

I have used the L.L. Bean Continental Rucksack for day hiking in the Smoky Mountains and a week-long trip from Florida to New England.
This pack holds all the necessities and easily fits in an airline overhead bin and under the seat (Southwest).
The most I’ve loaded in the pack is about 20 pounds of gear. The exterior pockets are perfect for a variety of smaller items and do not impede the capacity of the main compartment. The two side pockets can fit a 32-ounce Nalgene water bottle.
The straps, buckles, and back panel zipper (laptop pocket) have all worked flawlessly. I find the pack easy to adjust and very comfortable to wear.
I’m a long-time L.L. Bean customer (I still wear two Hurricane shirts I purchased in the late 1990s). This pack meets my expectations - it is rugged, durable, and of good quality. I also appreciate the simple and classic design, and it has become one of my favorite backpacks.

LL Bean your missing the point
As others have said the original Ruck was light years better in both construction and comfort. Offering a refund is not really solving the problem. Why not make the pack like the original? A company that prides or prided itself on durable goods should improve this bag not completely undo everything they accomplished with original ruck. Unless... you guys think you can sell a polished poo to an idiot. I don't recomend this bag to anyone who wants their bags to last. I love your stuff, but really?

Just another backpack now
This bag is now just another mass produced casualty. The Continental Rucksack used to be a gorgeous waxed canvas, with full grain leather accents, panels, and straps. Now it's plastic, plastic, and plastic.

Plenty of Useful Pockets and Comfortable
I've used the rucksack on three day hikes and found it very comfortable. The reason I chose the rucksack is the exterior pockets do not share space with the main compartment. Many packs do not have any or not enough pockets; and when they do, they usually share space with the main compartment. My 18 oz. water bottles fit perfectly in the side pockets.

Stitching coming out.
Only used 4 or 5 times and the stitching is coming loose. I do not overload it with more than 10 lbs.

This thing will be an heirloom
I bought this pack over 20 years ago. It’s been with me on four continents in everything from the most austere environments to busy cities, and still going strong. I fully expect to leave it to my son in my will in another 40 years.
