When is a “fleece jacket” not a fleece jacket?
First, it’s long for a “jacket” in my experience. Closer to car coat length, but if you have a very long waist, maybe it would seem jacket-like to you. Second and more important to me, I felt the “performance fleece” and “technical fleece” descriptors were deceptive, at least for anyone not steeped in the latest fabric inventions for fall/winter wear. For those, like me, not in the know, this is not fleece in the ordinary English meaning of the word. I expected this to be a kind of fleece, but it is not fleecy or fleece-like, it has no fuzzy fiber nap layer at all. So it is not even imitation fleece. The lining is a thin, smooth fabric that is claimed to mimic fleece’s insulation function but without the bulk (or the coziness). I was looking for the garment equivalent of comfort food and this product is not that. Also, as other reviewers have noted, it seems cheaply made in that when you pull your arms out of the sleeves, the thin “fleece” lining tends to follow your arms. That is awkward. On the bright side, it’s highly packable because it has no fleece in it. I returned it.

A great surprise
So, I bought this thinking/hoping it would be what I thought it would be BEFORE I read the reviews which really are a touch ersatz. For one, there's 3" of sleeve unlined at the cuff so how the sleeve lining is supposed to pull through the cuff is a mystery. Secondly, the fleece lining is what it should be--lightweight and thin and not bulky. This is a windbreaker. A light layer to throw over everything else to break the wind. I had a windbreaker with similar lining decades ago and it did its job and I was hoping this would be similar. I'm in Shetland in 3 weeks hence the need for wind and rain protection. This is light enough to meet the need nicely.

Fleece-Lined? What's Bean's definition of fleece?
The lining of this jacket bears no resemblance to anything I recognize as fleece, to the lining of any other Bean product I have that is fleece-lined, or, for that matter, to the definition of fleece fabric as a fabric with pile. The lining is a thin, flat, smooth fabric. I expected fleece and I feel I got fleeced.

Fleece lined wind breaker.
Came very wrinkled and not as heavy as I thought. I would have been more disappointed if it hadn't been on sale as I don't think it would be of good value if full price.
Not of the usual quality that I would expect from LL Bean.

I am very pleased with this product. It is light weight and easy to pack. It is a great spring/fall coat that is lined to keep you warm and doesn't let the wind in.
