Smallish.
Great fabric. Bought several shorts of the same size. This style was the only one that was a bit snug. But they are great for getting wet and drying quickly.

Too tight around the waist "
The shorts did not give in the waistline. I returned the shorts.
I have 2 pair of shorts different colors and they fit fine. I was disappointed.

Legs too wide.
I'm a 125 lb, small frame female. XS fits well in hips and waist. Belt is way too long. Shorts length falls just above my knee. The legs are wide, particularly on the inseam, so looks a little funky at the crotch. The material is stiff and scratchy. Softened a little with washing. I like the pockets. The color is dark navy, not true navy. I considered sending them back, but needed navy shorts. I'll wear them, but won't buy this style again.

uncomfortable at the waist
The mid-rise waist is a lot higher than I expected, and it felt very uncomfortable around my middle. The fit seemed a little large, as well. I almost always wear a medium in everything, but this medium seemed baggy.
