A new twist on a nautical tradition, our Irish fisherman cardigan sweater features a flattering shorter length and a more fitted style. In soft cotton yarns, with a beautiful open-stitch fair isle pattern.
The original fisherman's sweaters of the Aran Islands were knit with designs that told stories of a rich coastal heritage. From good luck to a plentiful catch, special sentiments were represented in each and every stitch. We've recreated these details in a fitted yet easygoing silhouette, beautifully detailed with a classic Fair Isle design.

Washed Orchid Fishermen Sweater
I love the beautiful colors of this fishermen sweater and I knew I wanted it right away. The colors work in all seasons. Washed Orchid is a classic mauve color as shown. It does seem to be made well. One of my favorite things about it is that it's 100% cotton and has a nice sturdy weight to it. I love that L.L. Bean offers other options besides wool. I wear a Medium in L.L. Bean. I think I could use a little more width through the arms. The length of the sweater and the width through the chest is great. The fit is in line with the measurements and based on the "fitted" description. I would agree with another reviewer that the neck is a bit snug (my neck is medium to slim as necks go). I was able to button the top button comfortably...but I can't imagine wearing it that way mostly because I think it looks a bit funny but to each their own. I think the design of the fishermen sweater, in general, is maybe more suited to a relaxed "chunky cardigan" fit. I just can't quite make it work for me with the look of the fitted arms but this could be because I have athletic arms. Maybe I could remedy this by going up to a Large in this style. Again, LL describes this as a fitted sweater and it is as described. I do think it's beautiful and quality made. Maybe not a great look for my build but I would absolutely recommend it to a friend. I think it's a heritage piece that someone could have for years and years.

It was a Gift
My Thirty-something daughter asked for this sweater for her birthday. I wasn't sure about the style. Not a traditional Fair Isle, slightly retro- fifty vibe.What a surprise when it arrived! Heavy weight, well made, beautiful, but subdued colors. I get a Annie Hall like vibe when I see her in this sweater. She looks adorable in it. La-de-da is all I can say.

Oh my; I love this sweater!
I recently saw someone who was wearing the rust/orange colored wild duck version of this sweater and I tried to find one of those without success. However, I am loving my new dog sweater! I had serious doubts about the red ears and eyes (?!), but the actual colors are deeper than my laptop screen showed them to be, the contrast is not as noticeable, and they look much better than I expected. The red specks are darker and don't look so much like hearts. I also love the main color, the stitch work including the open work, and the black accents. ......... I'm 5'3" and about 42.5" in the bust (between the chart sizes) and ordered size XL in Petite length after chatting with a representation. This sweater fits me very well (unless it shrinks), so I'd say it is fairly true to size but somewhat fitted especially for a heavier cardigan. It is not oversized. (Actual garment dimensions are available if you ask in a Chat, which are helpful.) For wearing over a thick top you might want to size up, or for an oversized look, but I have room for a lightweight sweater or shirt underneath. Happily it is longer than it appears in the photo of the model with her hand in her jeans pocket (she's probably very tall). My Petite XL measures about 25.5" down the center back when it is lying flat. The neckline is fairly high and narrow but isn't too small for me. The cotton is soft but not squishy soft, and will perhaps become softer after it's washed. I like the texture. The sweater is fairly heavy, with the section with the dogs being thicker than the rest. ........ I haven't washed it yet but will wash it on cold delicate when I do, turned inside out and inside a mesh laundry bag; then lay it flat to dry. Hopefully it won't shrink any. ........ It is a bit pricey and I don't usually spend this much on a sweater, especially on a non-cashmere one, but no regrets so far. I love everything about this unique sweater and expect to wear it for years.

Beautiful but bulky
Well made. It is however bulky and heavy. Could be an issue if putting on a tight fitting coat. Pattern is pretty (dogs).
